Paul Sewald
Paul Sewald Throwing off mound Saturday
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 3:53 PM
Sewald (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It appears to be the first time Sewald has thrown off a mound since he was diagnosed with a moderate teres major strain in mid-July. The veteran reliever is eligible for activation from the 60-day injured list Sept. 10 and hopes to join the Tigers' bullpen for the stretch run.
Alex Lange
Alex Lange Sent to Triple-A
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 3:03 PM
The Tigers optioned Lange to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The right-hander was reinstated from the 60-day IL this week and delivered a scoreless frame in his first MLB appearance since May of 2024, but he won't retain his spot in Detroit's bullpen. Drew Sommers was called up Friday to fill Lange's place on the roster.
Ryan Kreidler
Ryan Kreidler DFA'd by Tigers
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 2:40 PM
The Tigers designated Kreidler for assignment on Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Kreidler has spent most of the 2025 season in the minor leagues, and he hasn't logged a big-league at-bat since Apr. 20. The 27-year-old infielder will surrender his spot on the 40-man roster for Drew Sommers, who's having his contract selected from Triple-A Toledo.
Colt Keith
Colt Keith Settling in at third base
Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 1:24 PM
Keith is adjusting well to playing third base this season and could be the Tigers' long-term solution at the position, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Despite coming up through the minors as a third baseman, Keith spent most of his 2024 rookie season playing second. This year, the Tigers had designs on him playing first, but Spencer Torkelson's resurgence eventually pushed Keith back over to the hot corner. The 24-year-old is reacclimating well defensively, and he's also been producing at the plate, posting a .301/.379/.488 slash line since the start of July. Detroit reportedly pursued Alex Bregman and others this past offseason to slot in at third, but with Keith looking comfortable, he could lock down the starting role for the foreseeable future given his age and offensive upside.
Dylan Smith
Dylan Smith Possible late-season option?
Thu, Aug 21, 2025, 8:59 AM
Smith (shoulder) is a candidate to get called up to the majors late in the season if he's healthy enough, Sam Dykstra and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com report.
Analysis: Smith has been on the shelf at Triple-A Toledo since July 6 with a shoulder strain, though there is some optimism that he'll be able to return in September, which could make him a candidate to help the Tigers out of the bullpen if a need arises. Prior to getting hurt, the 25-year-old righty had posted a 1.38 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 13 innings across two stints with Detroit before being sent back to the minors in early July.
Charlie Morton
Charlie Morton Fans eight in win
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:24 PM
Morton (9-10) allowed two runs on three hits across six innings of work to earn the win Wednesday against the Astros. He walked three and struck out eight.
Analysis: Despite facing a tough Houston lineup, Morton was able to log another quality start for the Tigers and pick up his second win with his new team. The veteran has now made four starts for Detroit since coming over in a trade before the deadline, and he's mostly looked sharp with a 3.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29 strikeouts across 22.1 innings. Morton had a 5.42 ERA across 23 appearances for the Orioles earlier in the season, so fantasy managers may not completely trust him yet, but he's starting to emerge as a potentially useful option down the stretch. The 41-year-old righty lines up to make his next start Tuesday against the Athletics on the road.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Drives in two Wednesday
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:10 PM
Baez went 2-for-3 with two RBI in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Baez snapped a three-game hitless streak with his fifth multi-hit performance of the month. He's been solid overall in August, posting a .291 batting average, a home run, a stolen base and 10 RBI across 17 games. An infielder by trade, Baez has been seeing most of his time in center field recently with Matt Vierling (oblique) and Parker Meadows (quad) both on the injured list, though the former did start Wednesday's contest at shortstop before later moving to center.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Productive in win
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 5:05 PM
Dingler went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Dingler isn't known for his speed, as the triple was just his second of the season and he's never swiped a base at the MLB level. The catcher has still been plenty productive for the Tigers with a .274/.321/.432 slash line across 98 games this year. It's a big step forward for Dingler, who posted a .167/.195/.310 line in 27 regular-season games as a rookie in 2024.
Jose Urquidy
Jose Urquidy Poised for bullpen role
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 2:04 PM
The Tigers will use Urquidy (elbow) as a reliever if/when he's activated from the 60-day injured list, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Making his way back from June 2024 Tommy John surgery, Urquidy has allowed one run with a 4:0 K:BB over five innings covering four rehab starts. He hasn't gone more than two frames in any appearance, and the right-hander will continue to work in shorter, more frequent outings as the Tigers prep him for a relief role. Detroit has a $4 million option on Urquidy for 2026, and it could use him as a starter next year if that's picked up. However, there's no room for him in the rotation now, and there's also a lack of time to get stretched out.
Ty Madden
Ty Madden Not set to pitch in 2025
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 1:23 PM
Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that the Tigers have no expectation for Madden (shoulder) to pitch in any games this season, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Madden will continue his throwing progression as the season winds down, but the Tigers are making it a priority for the 25-year-old to enter the offseason at full health rather than counting on him to contribute in the minors or majors in 2025. The right-hander made six appearances (one start) for Detroit as a rookie last season but didn't make much of a run for a spot in the Opening Day rotation in spring training before he was shut down in early March with a rotator cuff strain.
Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb Preparing for bullpen role
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 1:06 PM
The Tigers plan to use Cobb (hips) as a reliever once he's activated from the 60-day injured list, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Cobb pitched out of the bullpen with Triple-A Toledo on his rehab assignment Tuesday, striking out four and not allowing a hit over three innings. The appearance was the eighth of his rehab assignment and first as a reliever. Manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that the Tigers want to keep Cobb "stretched out to 30, 40, 50 pitches," so Cobb likely won't be asked to build much further on three-inning workload he handled Tuesday. Cobb has been on the shelf all season while recovering from inflammation in both hips, but he's pitched well on his rehab assignment (1.53 ERA, 23:11 K:BB in 17.2 innings), so there's a chance he can still help the Tigers down the stretch.
Trey Sweeney
Trey Sweeney Taking seat against southpaw
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 10:27 AM
Sweeney is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 10, Sweeney has been a fairly regular presence in the lineup, starting in eight of the previous 10 games while going 6-for-25 (.240 average) with one home run, six runs and four RBI. Sweeney could lose out on playing time once Parker Meadows' (quadriceps) return from the injured list likely pushes Javier Baez back to shortstop on a more frequent basis, but for now, the 25-year-old could continue to get steady playing time versus righties. The left-handed-hitting Sweeney will take a seat Wednesday against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, however.
Colt Keith
Colt Keith Idle against lefty
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 10:23 AM
Keith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Detroit is stocking up on extra right-handed bats to counter Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, so Keith will hit the bench for the series finale along with fellow left-handed hitters Zach McKinstry, Trey Sweeney and Kerry Carpenter. Keith -- who had started in each of the last eight games -- is slashing just .143/.200/.167 over 45 plate appearances against lefties this season.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter On bench versus lefty
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 10:20 AM
Carpenter is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Detroit is stocking up on extra right-handed bats to counter Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, so Carpenter will hit the bench for the series finale along with fellow left-handed hitters Zach McKinstry, Trey Sweeney and Colt Keith. Carpenter -- who had started in each of the last 10 games -- is slashing just .213/.224/.383 over 49 plate appearances against southpaws this season.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Dazzles in pitchers' duel
Wed, Aug 20, 2025, 4:49 AM
Skubal didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 extra-inning win over the Astros. He struck out 10.
Analysis: Matched up against fellow AL Cy Young contender Hunter Brown, Skubal made it clear he wasn't going to relinquish his crown without a fight. The quality start was the 16th of the season for the southpaw, and Skubal racked up a massive 25 swinging strikes on 95 pitches (68 total strikes) as he fanned double-digit batters for the ninth time. He has only one win in eight outings since the beginning of July, but that's due to a lack of run support from the Tigers' offense -- he's delivered a 2.68 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 62:11 K:BB in 50.1 innings during that span. Skubal will look to get back in the win column in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the A's.
Will Vest
Will Vest Earns sixth win Tuesday
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 9:26 PM
Vest (6-2) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Tuesday's 1-0, 10-inning victory over the Astros. He allowed a hit and struck out one.
Analysis: Vest successfully navigated the top of the ninth and tenth innings, then earned the win when Gleyber Torres ended the game on walkoff walk. The veteran reliever came into the season with only nine career wins at the MLB level, and his previous high in a season was three. Vest also leads the Tigers with 18 saves, and he's struck out 61 batters across 55 innings this year to go along with a strong 2.45 ERA, giving him plenty of fantasy value across the board.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Delivers walkoff walk
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 9:21 PM
Torres went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Tuesday's 1-0, 10-inning win over the Astros.
Analysis: Torres was the only player in the game to record multiple hits, but it was his walk that served as the key play of the pitcher's duel. The infielder drew a bases-loaded free pass in the bottom of the 10th inning to bring home a run and walk off the Astros. Torres has shown an improved eye at the plate this season, as his walk rate is a touch over 13 percent after sitting around 10 percent each of the last two years in New York. He's been a solid No. 2 hitter for a surging Detroit offense in his first season with the Tigers.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Taking seat Tuesday
Tue, Aug 19, 2025, 2:25 PM
Baez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Astros.
Analysis: Baez has a .557 OPS and 0:33 BB:K since the beginning of July and has been seeing more days on the bench since then. The Tigers will deploy Wenceel Perez in center field and Trey Sweeney at shortstop Tuesday.
Trey Sweeney
Trey Sweeney Homers, triples in big win
Mon, Aug 18, 2025, 8:27 PM
Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a triple, a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Monday's 10-0 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Sweeney chipped in his second triple of the season, but his key swing came in the seventh inning, when he launched his sixth home run of the year with two runners on. It was the young shortstop's first long ball since July 6 and gives him something to build on, as he's currently seeing regular playing time with Javier Baez focusing on center field as Detroit deals with injuries to Matt Vierling (oblique) and Parker Meadows (quad).
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Homers, swipes base Monday
Mon, Aug 18, 2025, 8:20 PM
Perez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a stolen base in Monday's 10-0 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Perez extended his hitting steak to four games, and he's now batting a cool .340 across 16 contests this month. The 25-year-old outfielder is up to 10 home runs and seven stolen bases for the season, with the homers representing a new career high. If Perez remains active on the bases, he could also reach double figures in both home runs and steals for the first time at the MLB level.
