Tomas Nido
Tomas Nido Receives NRI deal with Detroit
Thu, Jan 16, 2025, 1:38 PM
The Tigers re-signed Nido to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
Analysis: Nido finished the 2024 season with Triple-A Toledo after inking a minor-league pact with the Tigers and now returns to the organization. The career .210/.245/.309 hitter over parts of eight big-league seasons could have a shot to open the year as Jake Rogers' backup.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Notches new deal with Detroit
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 6:48 PM
Brieske agreed on a one-year, $1.025 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Brieske and Detroit were able to reach an agreement before Thursday's deadline. The right-hander produced a 3.59 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 69 strikeouts, six holds and a save over 67.2 innings in 46 regular-season appearances, including 12 starts, with the Tigers in 2024. Brieske will likely occupy a significant role in the team's bullpen again in 2025.
Matt Vierling
Matt Vierling Avoids hearing with Detroit
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 1:24 PM
The Tigers and Vierling avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.005 million contract Thursday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's a substantial pay increase for Vierling, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time. The super utility player hit .257/.312/.423 with 16 home runs across 144 games for Detroit in 2024 and should see close to everyday playing time again in 2025.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Settles with Detroit
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 1:15 PM
Skubal agreed to a one-year, $10.15 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The left-hander will get a raise of nearly $8 million in his second year of arbitration eligibility after unanimously winning the American League Cy Young Award in 2024. Skubal posted a 2.39 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 228:35 K:BB across 192 regular-season innings and should be one of the top pitchers in baseball again this year.
Jason Foley
Jason Foley Inks deal with Detroit
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 12:55 PM
Foley agreed to a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The right-hander receives a significant raise in his first season of arbitration eligibility after recording 28 saves with a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB across 60 innings during the regular season last year. Foley is the early favorite to close games early in 2025, but he's not guaranteed the job and could work in more of a committee capacity.
Will Vest
Will Vest Avoids arbitration
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 12:33 PM
Vest and the Tigers agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract Thursday to avoid arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Vest enjoyed a career-best season out of the Detroit bullpen in 2024, turning in a 2.82 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 63:18 K:BB in 70.1 regular-season innings while gathering three wins, two saves and 14 holds. The Tigers' closing situation isn't settled heading into 2025, but Vest likely won't be manager A.J. Hinch's top choice for save situations and is expected to continue seeing the bulk of his opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings.
Jake Rogers
Jake Rogers Settles at $2.64 million
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 9:52 AM
The Tigers and Rogers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.64 million contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Rogers had been arbitration-eligible for a second time. The catcher slashed a disappointing .197/.255/.352 with 10 home runs in 2024, but he remains a trusted receiver and is slated to open 2025 at the top of the Tigers' catching depth chart.
Casey Mize
Casey Mize Under contract for 2025
Thu, Jan 9, 2025, 9:26 AM
Mize and the Tigers avoided arbitration after agreeing to a one-year, $2.34 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Tigers declined Mize's $3.1 million club option for 2025 earlier in the offseason, but the 27-year-old right-hander will stick around in Detroit at a more team-friendly price. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft has struggled to bounce back from his June 2022 Tommy John surgery, which cost him the entire 2023 season. He broke camp last season as a member of Detroit's rotation but proceeded to turn in middling ratios (4.49 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 10.8 K-BB%) over his 102.1 innings with the big club spanning 22 appearances (20 starts), and the Tigers ultimately moved him to the bullpen down the stretch. Mize will likely have to compete for a back-end spot in Detroit's rotation once again this spring.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Role undetermined
Fri, Dec 27, 2024, 11:33 AM
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday that Torkelson's role for 2025 is not yet defined, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Analysis: The Tigers have signed Gleyber Torres to play second base and will move Colt Keith to first base, leaving Torkelson without a clear path to playing time against right-handed pitching. He could be used in a short-side platoon with Keith at first base, but the Tigers dangling Torkelson in trade talks might be a likelier scenario. The former top prospect popped 31 home runs in 2023 but put up a .669 OPS in 2024 and spent a chunk of the season in the minors.
Colt Keith
Colt Keith Moving to first base
Fri, Dec 27, 2024, 11:26 AM
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday that Keith will move to first base next season, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The newly-signed Gleyber Torres will take over as the Tigers' second baseman, shifting Keith over to the cold corner. Keith has never played first base in pro ball, but he's been working out there this offseason and the Tigers don't seem to have any concerns about his ability to adapt to the position. With Keith now at first base at least against righties, Spencer Torkelson's role on Detroit's roster looks unclear.
Bailey Horn
Bailey Horn Exits 40-man roster
Fri, Dec 27, 2024, 11:16 AM
The Tigers designated Horn for assignment Friday.
Analysis: The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-signed Gleyber Torres. Horn was claimed off waivers by the Tigers in November and the left-handed reliever will now go through the waiver process again.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Could be out of starting job
Fri, Dec 27, 2024, 9:25 AM
Torkelson might be limited to a short-side platoon or reserve role following the Tigers' signing of Gleyber Torres, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Torres is expected to play second base for Detroit, and the feeling seems to be that Colt Keith is likelier to handle first base than third base, which would leave Torkelson without a spot in the lineup at least against right-handed pitching. Torkelson stumbled to a .669 OPS in the 2024 regular season and spent a chunk of the season in the minors. However, the former top prospect cranked 31 homers in 2023 and is still just 25, so he should have some trade value if the Tigers want to go that route.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Agrees to deal with Detroit
Fri, Dec 27, 2024, 8:49 AM
The Tigers agreed to terms with Torres on a contract Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com, it's a one-year, $15 million deal. He's coming off a down year, having posted a .709 OPS with 15 homers over 154 regular-season contests, but Torres collected an .800 OPS with 25 long balls in 2023. Torres is expected to play second base for the Tigers, per Rogers, which means Colt Keith will shift either to third base or first base.
Jordan Balazovic
Jordan Balazovic Signs minor-league deal with Tigers
Sun, Dec 22, 2024, 7:15 PM
Balazovic signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers on Sunday, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball Media reports.
Analysis: Balazovic will return to the United States after spending the end of the 2024 season as a member of Doosan Bears in the KBO. With the Bears, the right-hander produced a 4.26 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 69 strikeouts over 57.0 innings. He will now get a shot to prove himself with Detroit and attempt to crack their 40-man roster.
Brendan White
Brendan White Back with Detroit on MiLB deal
Thu, Dec 19, 2024, 2:04 PM
The Tigers re-signed White to a minor-league contract on Dec. 13.
Analysis: White was non-tendered by Detroit last month but is back in the organization on a minors pact. The 26-year-old missed much of the 2024 season with elbow problems and underwent hydrodissection in August for nerve issues. White will be healthy for spring training and will likely begin the 2025 season in the Triple-A Toledo bullpen.
Ryan Miller
Ryan Miller Heads to Detroit as NRI
Wed, Dec 18, 2024, 4:08 PM
The Tigers signed Miller to a minor-league contract Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Miller, who turns 29 in March, got into 13 games with the Angels in 2024, posting a 4.15 ERA and 11:8 K:BB over 13 innings. The right-handed reliever will compete for a spot in Detroit's bullpen but will likely begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Toledo.
Akil Baddoo
Akil Baddoo Stays with Tigers
Tue, Dec 17, 2024, 5:06 PM
Baddoo cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.
Analysis: Baddoo will remain within the Tigers organization after being designated for assignment Dec. 10. 2024 was the outfielder's worst season yet in the majors, recording a .521 OPS and just five RBI across 82 plate appearances. The 26-year-old may factor to be a four-A player as he has posted a .802 OPS in 123 games for Triple-A Toledo since the 2022 season.
Brian Serven
Brian Serven Receives NRI from Detroit
Mon, Dec 16, 2024, 5:19 PM
The Tigers signed Serven to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports.
Analysis: Serven, 29, slashed .159/.243/.222 in 28 games with the Blue Jays this past season. It's possible he could win the backup catcher job in Detroit behind Jake Rogers if the Tigers want to give Dillon Dingler a little more seasoning in the minors.
Akil Baddoo
Akil Baddoo Pushed off 40-man
Tue, Dec 10, 2024, 6:46 PM
The Tigers designated Baddoo for assignment Tuesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: With the signing of Alex Cobb becoming official Tuesday, the Tigers needed to create room on their 40-man roster, so Baddoo will end up as the roster casualty. Baddoo slashed just .137/.220/.301 in 31 big-league games last season, though his .758 OPS and 29 stolen bases in Triple-A could be enough to attract attention from another organization.
Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb Official with Tigers
Tue, Dec 10, 2024, 4:27 PM
Cobb passed his physical with the Tigers on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: The Tigers agreed to a one-year contract with Cobb on Monday, a deal which includes $15 million for 2025 with incentives of $1 million apiece for reaching the 140- and 150-inning thresholds. Cobb dealt with injuries during his one season with the Guardians in 2024, but he logged 149.2 and 151.1 innings during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively, as part of the Giants' rotation.
