Geoff Hartlieb
Geoff Hartlieb Connects with Detroit on MiLB deal
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 1:56 PM
Hartlieb signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Saturday.
Analysis: Hartlieb made his organizational debut at Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings in a relief appearance. The 31-year-old righty had previously spent the entire 2025 season with the Yankees, making two appearances in the majors and 24 appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Ricky Vanasco
Ricky Vanasco Back with Detroit
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 1:53 PM
Vanasco signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Thursday.
Analysis: Just two days after the Tigers released him from his minor-league deal, Vanasco returned to the organization on a new pact. Vanasco made four appearances in the majors in 2024 but has pitched exclusively in the minors in 2025, recording a 4.76 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 28.1 innings between stops at Triple-A Toledo and Single-A Lakeland.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Shut down at Triple-A
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 1:50 PM
Triple-A Toledo placed Brieske on its 7-day injured list Thursday due to an unspecified injury.
Analysis: Brieske's move to the IL came just a couple days after he retired just one batter while allowing five earned runs on two hits and three walks in a relief appearance for Toledo. Before he was optioned to Triple-A on June 12, Brieske logged a 6.55 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 22 innings out of the Tigers bullpen.
Dylan Smith
Dylan Smith Shelved at Triple-A
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 1:48 PM
Triple-A Toledo placed Smith on its 7-day injured list Thursday due to an unspecified injury.
Analysis: After being optioned to Toledo on July 2, Smith made just one appearance for the Triple-A club before landing on the IL. The 25-year-old right-hander maintains a 2.70 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB in 26.2 innings between Toledo and Double-A Erie this season.
Sawyer Gipson-Long
Sawyer Gipson-Long Stellar in rehab start
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 1:10 PM
Gipson-Long (neck) struck out five and allowed no hits and one walk over 4.2 scoreless innings in a rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Toledo.
Analysis: Pitching for the first time since landing on the 15-day injured list July 2 due to a neck strain, Gipson-Long showed no ill effects of the injury while needing just 59 pitches to retire 14 batters. The Tigers haven't decided on the next steps for Gipson-Long, and though he isn't fully stretched out yet, the team could be willing to have him bypass another rehab start and return as a bulk reliever when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up following the All-Star break. Keider Montero finished the first half as Detroit's fifth starter but doesn't have a firm grasp on the role.
Tommy Kahnle
Tommy Kahnle Struggles over weekend
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 7:39 AM
In games against the Mariners on Saturday and Sunday, Kahnle allowed seven earned runs on six hits and two walks without retiring a single batter.
Analysis: Kahnle had two of his worst outings of the season on consecutive days, and he saw his ERA climb from 2.84 to 4.50 in the process. This whole month of July has been a struggle for the righty, as he's allowed 12 earned runs on 11 hits and five walks across six appearances (2.1 innings). Meanwhile, Will Vest continues to pitch well as Detroit's closer, sitting with a 2.30 ERA and a team-high 15 saves. At this point, Vest is clearly the reliever to roster in the Tigers' bullpen, particularly given Kahnle's recent poor form.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Tallies two hits, steal in loss
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 3:56 PM
Baez went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners. He also stole a base.
Analysis: Baez has been scuffling a bit this month, but he finished up the first half of the season on a high note before his All-Star Game appearance later this week. The veteran is having a bounceback campaign with a .275 batting average and .752 OPS across 79 games. During the 2024 regular season, Baez batted just .184 with a .515 OPS. While he's hitting better, Baez isn't running as much as he did when he was younger, as Sunday's stolen base was just his second all year in three attempts.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Goes deep again Sunday
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 3:50 PM
Greene went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Greene went deep for the second straight day, and he how has seven long balls over his last 14 games. For the year, the young outfielder is up to 24 home runs, which ties the career-best total he recorded during the 2024 regular season. The 24 homers are also good for eighth in the majors, and Greene's 78 RBI are the third most in baseball. The 24-year-old is certainly worthy of his starting spot in next week's All-Star Game.
Matt Vierling
Matt Vierling Playing time picking up
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 11:43 AM
Vierling will start in right field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Though he'll be filling in for a resting Wenceel Perez in the series finale, Vierling could be encroaching on Parker Meadows' role as the Tigers' preferred option in center field. Since returning from the injured list June 28, Vierling had been in center against left-handed pitching, but he also received the nod over Meadows in two of the Tigers' previous four matchups with righties. Vierling has gone just 4-for-25 with a 6:6 BB:K in eight games since being activated.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Exiting lineup for series finale
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 11:38 AM
Perez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: He'll give way to Matt Vierling in right field after starting the last four games and going 4-for-13 with two walks, three runs, one RBI and one stolen base. Though he appears to be facing competition from Vierling and Parker Meadows for one of two spots in the Detroit outfield against right-handed pitching, Perez has done well to maintain steady playing time since returning from the injured list in late May. Unless he's used off the bench Sunday, Perez will head into the All-Star break with a .266/.321/.516 slash line through 38 games.
Casey Mize
Casey Mize Bad third sinks outing
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 9:32 PM
Mize (9-3) took the loss after throwing three innings, allowing six runs and one walk while striking out four, during Saturday's 15-7 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: In his last start before the All-Star break, Mize had a rare rough outing, lasting a season-low three innings and allowing a season-high six runs. It snaps a streak of nine straight starts allowing three runs or fewer for the right-hander. The 28-year-old will still enter the All-Star break with great numbers, posting a 3.15 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 88.2 innings pitched.
Colt Keith
Colt Keith Reaches three times in loss
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 6:27 PM
Keith went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored in Saturday's 15-7 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Despite the lopsided loss, Keith continued his strong performance as Detroit's leadoff man. He's batted first in each of his starts dating back to June 19, and during that time, Keith is batting .319 with four home runs, 10 RBI and 14 runs scored across 19 games. The young infielder's fantasy stock is on the rise given his prime position atop a potent Detroit lineup that is sixth in the majors in runs scored.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Tallies three hits Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 6:18 PM
Torres went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored in Saturday's 15-7 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Torres had been scuffling a bit, as he came into Saturday having gone just 2-for-18 in the past week, but he snapped out of his slump with his first three-hit effort since June 19. Overall, the All-Star infielder is now batting .277 with an .808 OPS and 50 runs scored across 83 games, and he's been an effective No. 2 hitter for the Tigers ahead of sluggers Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Goes deep in lopsided loss
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 6:13 PM
McKinstry went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Saturday's 15-7 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: A day after swiping two bases, McKinstry made his mark with his eighth home run of the season. It's one away from matching his career high, as the utility player hasn't generally been known for his power. McKinstry is also now sitting with an .842 OPS, which would easily be a new high-water mark and is well above his career .684 figure. McKinstry has been a sneaky fantasy performer in 2025 who can fill in at multiple positions across the field.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Blasts 23rd home run
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 6:06 PM
Greene went 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's 15-7 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: While Seattle had most of the offensive fun Saturday, Greene still managed to deliver for fantasy managers. The 24-year-old launched his 23rd home run of the season in the fifth inning with two runners on and tacked on an additional RBI on a sacrifice fly. Greene is now one homer away from matching his career high of 24, which he recorded last year. His 77 RBI this season are already a new career best, and they're also tied for third in the majors with Pete Alonso and Seiya Suzuki.
Parker Meadows
Parker Meadows Sitting down Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 9:36 AM
Meadows isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle.
Analysis: Meadows has collected a base hit in each of his last three games, though he's also struck out six times in 12 at-bats while doing so. He'll retreat to the bench Saturday while Matt Vierling starts in center field, batting seventh.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Getting Saturday off
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 9:34 AM
Baez isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle.
Analysis: Baez will take a seat Saturday after going 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's contest. Trey Sweeney will take his place at shortstop and bat eighth for Detroit.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Idle Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 9:31 AM
Dingler isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Dingler will grab a seat on the bench Saturday after going 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a HBP during Friday's series opener. Jake Rogers will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Records two hits, stolen base
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 7:49 AM
Perez went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Friday's 12-3 loss to the Mariners. He also stole a base.
Analysis: The steal was just the second of the season for Perez, and Friday also marked his first two-hit game since June 24. In 14 contests since that game, the outfielder is batting just .204 with a .591 OPS. Overall, Perez has a much stronger .266 batting average and .843 OPS, which are boosted up due to his hot start once he got back from the injured list in late May. Perez still has some fantasy appeal in his starting role, though the unsustainable production he was delivering earlier has tailed off.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Tallies two hits Friday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 7:41 AM
Greene went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 12-3 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Greene recorded his first triple of the season as he also notched just his second multi-hit performance of the month. In July, the talented outfielder is slashing just .158/.220/.447 across 10 games, which is down significantly from his overall line of .281/.334/.529. Greene still has done more than enough to earn a starting nod in the All-Star Game, as he also has a team-high 22 home runs and 73 RBI, and he should be able to get hot at the plate again soon based on his track record.
