Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Has solid Opening Day
Fri, Mar 28, 2025, 8:46 AM
Torres went 2-for-5 with a run scored in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers. He also stole a base.
Analysis: Torres batted second in his debut with the Tigers, and he figures to remain near the top of the order all season. After playing with the likes of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto last year in New York, the infielder should have a more prominent offensive role with Detroit, which could boost his fantasy production. The stolen base is also an encouraging sign for Torres, who only swiped four bags in 2024 after recording at least 10 steals the previous three seasons.
Manuel Margot
Manuel Margot Collects two hits on Opening Day
Fri, Mar 28, 2025, 8:41 AM
Margot went went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: Less than a week after signing with Detroit, Margot started in right field and batted fifth on Opening Day. Los Angeles did run out southpaw Blake Snell, which led to Kerry Carpenter riding the pine. Against righties, the Tigers figure to deploy Carpenter and likely sit Margot, depending on who fills the DH spot. The team is also waiting on Matt Vierling (shoulder), Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back) to return to the outfield. For now, the veteran Margot has some increased short-term fantasy value, though he's only been a middling offensive player in recent seasons.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Riding pine versus southpaw
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 3:18 PM
Carpenter isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: Although the Tigers seemed open to the idea of Carpenter starting against left-handed pitchers early in spring training, the 27-year-old will begin Thursday's contest on the bench with Blake Snell set to throw the first pitch for Los Angeles. Riley Greene, Ryan Kreidler and Manuel Margot will make up the Tigers' outfield while Carpenter rests.
Trey Sweeney
Trey Sweeney Taking seat versus LHP
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 3:14 PM
Sweeney isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: The left-handed bat of Sweeney will stay put in the dugout Thursday with southpaw Blake Snell scheduled to take the mound for L.A. Javier Baez will take over at shortstop and bat seventh.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Taking seat against lefty
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 3:11 PM
McKinstry isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: Left-hander Blake Snell will draw the start for Los Angeles on Thursday, so the lefty-hitting McKinstry will begin Opening Day on the bench. Andy Ibanez will draw the start at third base instead and bat leadoff.
Matt Vierling
Matt Vierling Sent to injured list
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 12:54 PM
The Tigers placed Vierling (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Vierling was cleared to resume hitting and perform shoulder strengthening exercises Friday as the latest step in his rehab from a right rotator cuff strain. He still has a few more boxes to check before he can hope to begin a rehab assignment, but the door is still open for him to return to Detroit before May.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Moved to 10-day IL
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 12:50 PM
The Tigers placed Perez (back) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Perez spent most of spring training rehabbing his lower-back inflammation. Most recently, he received an injection in his back and has already been ruled out for at least another month by president of baseball operations Scott Harris. With Matt Vierling (shoulder) also out, Ryan Kreidler is the favorite to start in center field to begin Detroit's season.
Ty Madden
Ty Madden Officially placed on IL
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 12:44 PM
The Tigers placed Madden (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Madden has been sidelined by a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder since early March and remains without a return timeline. Once he's healthy, he'll likely be sent to Triple-A Toledo or work as a long reliever out of Detroit's bullpen.
Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb Placed on IL
Thu, Mar 27, 2025, 12:40 PM
The Tigers placed Cobb (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Right hip inflammation has plagued Cobb since the early stages of spring camp, and he didn't resume throwing off a mound until last week. He remains without a clear return timeline and likely won't have one until he's cleared to face live hitters, but he shouldn't be expected back for at least another month.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Makes Opening Day roster
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 2:29 PM
The Tigers will include Torkelson on their Opening Day roster, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Heading into spring training, Torkelson seemed to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot. However, he had a great Grapefruit League showing with a 1.069 OPS and five home runs. Torkelson looks to be in line for regular at-bats at designated hitter with Kerry Carpenter being needed defensively to cover for the Tigers' outfield injuries.
Ryan Kreidler
Ryan Kreidler Officially makes Opening Day roster
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 1:24 PM
The Tigers recalled Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Kreidler was optioned this past weekend, but he rejoined the club earlier this week following a rash of outfield injuries. The 27-year-old looks to be the favorite to handle center field for the Tigers while Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back) are shelved.
Justyn-Henry Malloy
Justyn-Henry Malloy Optioned to Triple-A
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 1:20 PM
The Tigers optioned Malloy to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Malloy had a solid spring in slashing .314/.397/.373, but he wasn't able to land an Opening Day roster spot even with the Tigers battling multiple injuries. Ryan Kreidler was awarded the Tigers' final roster spot.
Andrew Chafin
Andrew Chafin Bound for Triple-A
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 1:17 PM
Chafin will report to Trriple-A Toledo after the Tigers informed him Wednesday that he won't be included on the Opening Day roster and will be reassigned to the minors, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Even though the Tigers unexpectedly had an extra spot in the bullpen available with Jason Foley surprisingly getting optioned to Triple-A coming off a 28-save season with Detroit, Chafin wasn't able to make the cut. While the 34-year-old lefty boasts a fairly long track record of success in the majors, a poor spring in which he yielded eight earned runs on seven hits and six walks over six Grapefruit League innings kept him from winning an Opening Day spot. Brenan Hanifee instead appears to have clinched the final opening in the Detroit bullpen.
Ben Gamel
Ben Gamel Links up with Detroit on MiLB pact
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 12:24 PM
Gamel agreed to a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: While Gamel is receiving a minor-league deal, he has a chance to be in Detroit soon given the club's injury problems in the outfield. Gamel's contract will be worth $1.2 million at the MLB level, with more available in incentives. The 32-year-old slashed .247/.384/.333 in 38 games at the big-league level in 2024.
Brenan Hanifee
Brenan Hanifee Cracks Opening Day roster
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 12:21 PM
Hanifee will be included on the Tigers' Opening Day roster, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: He ultimately got the call over Jason Foley, who was surprisingly optioned to Triple-A Toledo earlier Wednesday. Hanifee spun 10.2 scoreless innings this spring with a 9:3 K:BB and held a 1.84 ERA and 23:6 K:BB across 29.1 regular-season frames with the Tigers last season. He's better at getting groundballs than strikeouts and will likely serve in middle relief.
Jason Foley
Jason Foley Sent to minors
Wed, Mar 26, 2025, 11:00 AM
The Tigers optioned Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Foley allowed five runs over 7.1 innings during Grapefruit League play but also had a 10:0 K:BB. The 29-year-old led the Tigers with 28 saves last season and had seemed to be firmly in the picture to close heading into 2025, but Detroit will give him time in the minors first to sharpen up. Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest are among the candidates to see save chances for the Tigers in what looks like a murky situation for fantasy.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez May get longer look in center
Tue, Mar 25, 2025, 10:53 AM
With the Tigers dealing with a number of outfield injuries, Baez is an option to see more time in center field, including on Opening Day, Adrian Garro of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Detroit is currently down Matt Vierling (shoulder), Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back), all of whom are natural center-field candidates. The Tigers did scoop up veteran Manuel Margot over the weekend, but president of baseball operations Scott Harris said that he views him as more of a corner outfielder, per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. Baez has started to see time in center recently, and he may end up as the default option there, at least in the short term, though utility man Ryan Kreidler is also back in the mix after rejoining the MLB roster. While Baez has struggled in recent seasons, the potential addition of outfield eligibility could give him a small boost in fantasy leagues.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Will focus mostly on OF corners
Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 6:19 PM
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris indicated Monday that Greene is likely to remain primarily a corner outfielder, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Tigers have lost three center fielders to injury in Matt Vierling (shoulder), Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back). Greene has extensive experience in center field and has played there some this spring, but it would appear the club still plans to play him mostly in left field. Ryan Kreidler could be the favorite to handle reps in center field for Detroit for the time being.
Manuel Margot
Manuel Margot Unlikely to play much center field
Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 6:14 PM
Tigers president of baseball operation Scott Harris indicated Monday that he views Margot as more of a corner outfielder, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Tigers' outfield, and particularly center field, has been hit hard by injuries, with Matt Vierling (shoulder), Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back) going down. While Margot is capable of handling center field, it would appear he's more likely to see action in right field for the Tigers.
Ryan Kreidler
Ryan Kreidler Back in majors, could see CF reps
Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 5:28 PM
Kreidler has rejoined the Tigers and is a candidate to see starts in center field while Parker Meadows (arm) and Wenceel Perez (back) are out, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The Tigers are also down Matt Vierling (shoulder) in addition to Meadows and Perez, leaving them with very few options to play center field. President of baseball operations Scott Harris noted Monday that Kreidler is an "elite defender" and that "pitching and defense is going to be really important for us moving forward," indicating that Kreidler could see ample playing time in center field. The club also signed Manuel Margot to enhance its outfield depth.
